Resolve a failed post
Failed posts, under Accounting, holds entries that were sent to the provider and did not succeed — rejected outright, or retried until the attempts ran out.
Needs organisation-admin access.
Read the error before recovering
The temptation is to hit Recover and see what happens. Usually that just fails again.
Failures divide into two kinds, and only one is worth an immediate retry:
Transient — the provider was unavailable or slow. Recovering works, and often the outbox has already retried on its own.
Structural — an account that does not exist at the provider, a closed period, a value the provider refuses. Recovering changes nothing until the underlying cause is fixed. The attempt count tells you which you are looking at: something tried several times and still failing is not transient.
Steps
- Open Failed posts under Accounting.
- For each entry, read the error, and check the type, stream, attempts and when it was last tried.
- Fix the cause, if there is one to fix.
- Recover the entry.
Common causes
The account does not exist at the provider. Someone deleted or archived it there. Recreate it, or map the category to a different one.
The period is closed. The provider will not accept an entry dated into a closed period. Reopening it, or getting agreement on where the entry should sit, has to come first.
The connection is in error. If everything is failing rather than one entry, look at the connection before the entries. Expired credentials fail every post identically — Re-authorize on the connection's page renews access.
Work in bulk when the cause is shared
One expired connection or one deleted account produces many identical failures. Fix the shared cause, then recover them together rather than reading each error separately.
An empty queue
Shows No failed posts. That is the resting state — unlike Issues, which is empty only once your configuration is complete.
Not the other two queues
An entry here was sent. One that could not be built is in Issues and cannot be recovered; one that posted but does not tally is in Exceptions. See the three queues.
