Set up payment methods

A payment method is how money reaches you. A gateway is what a channel calls it. Setting up means creating the first and mapping the second onto it.

Needs organisation-admin access.

Steps

  1. Create a payment method for each genuine route money takes — a card processor, bank transfer, cash at a counter.
  2. On each channel, map the gateway names it reports to those payment methods.
  3. Set a default payment method on the channel for anything unrecognised.

The channel side is covered in map a payment gateway.

Do not try to predict the names

You do not need to know every gateway a channel will report. The first time an unfamiliar one appears it is recorded as seen but unmapped and shown to you.

Mapping it then also applies to the payments that were waiting on it, so nothing is lost by dealing with it after the orders have started arriving.

Name for how the money actually arrives

Map to the route the money takes, not just the label the gateway uses. Where two channels report the same gateway name but settle into different accounts, they need separate payment methods — mappings are per channel, so each maps its own.

Getting this wrong makes reconciling a payout hard later, because the money will not be where the mapping says it should be.

Set a default

A channel's default payment method covers payments whose gateway matches nothing mapped, keeping things moving while a new gateway waits to be dealt with.

Without one, a payment on an unrecognised gateway waits until you map it.

What this feeds

Which payment method a payment is recorded against, which in turn feeds how it posts and how it reconciles against the money that actually reaches the bank. See gateway payouts.
