Add barcodes to a variant

A barcode is recorded against a unit of measure, not against the variant directly — an Each and a Case of 12 are scanned by different codes, so each carries its own.

  1. Go to Catalogue → Products, open the product, then select the variant in the Variants table to open its detail sheet.
  2. In the Barcodes section, find the unit of measure you're adding a code to and select Add barcode (or Manage, if it already has one).
  3. Type or scan the code into Code, choose its Type (EAN-13, GTIN-14, Code 128, Internal, Custom, and more), and tick Make this the primary barcode if this should be the one other parts of Yessort default to. Select Add.

For the six GS1 trade-item types — EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, GTIN-14 and ITF-14 — what you enter is stored normalised to 14 digits, so an EAN-13 and its GTIN-14 equivalent are treated as the same code. Other types are kept exactly as entered.

If the code is already in use

A barcode isn't required to be unique across your organisation — suppliers sometimes reuse the same code across genuinely different variants. If the code you enter already belongs to another variant, Yessort lists who owns it and asks you to confirm you meant to share it before adding it here too. Only confirm the share if it's genuinely intentional; otherwise, double check you've got the right code.

Minting a barcode instead

Generate internal mints an in-store EAN-13 for a unit of measure automatically — but it's only offered once that unit of measure already has at least one barcode recorded. For a unit of measure with none yet, the Add barcode form opens automatically instead of showing that option, so type or scan its first code by hand there. Once it has one barcode, Generate internal becomes available for adding a second.
