Add a routing rule

Rules narrow the candidate sites for a line. Each one filters what the rule above it left.

Under Routing rules in your organisation's settings. Needs organisation-admin access.

Steps

  1. Open Routing rules.
  2. Add a rule and choose its kind:
    • Closest to destination
    • Stay in destination country
    • Ranked sites
  3. Configure it. Only ranked sites needs anything — the order of your sites.
  4. Position it. Rules run lowest priority number first.
  5. Save, and activate the rule set.

Full detail on each in routing rule kinds.

Position matters more than quantity

The engine stops at the first rule that narrows candidates to one site. Everything below it never runs.

So the practical guidance is:

  • Hard requirements first. A border you will not ship across belongs above a preference about which warehouse you would rather use.
  • Ranked sites last. It can nearly always name a survivor, so it is the natural tie-breaker. Put it first and it will decide almost everything on its own, leaving the rules below it decorative.

Adding a rule that changes nothing

If a new rule seems to have no effect, it is usually sitting below a rule that already narrows to one site. Move it up.

Disabling instead of deleting

Disabling a rule skips it while keeping its configuration, so you can switch one off to see the effect and switch it back without setting it up again. Prefer it to deletion when you are experimenting.

Two rules that overlap

Closest to destination and stay in destination country behave similarly, because closest-to-destination works at country level rather than measuring true distance. Using both is usually redundant — pick one.

Nothing to add for stock

There is no rule for stock availability, and you do not need one. Sites without enough stock are removed before any of your rules run.
