Choose a fallback site

The fallback site is where a line goes when no eligible site has stock for it. A rule set cannot be activated without one.

Under Routing rules in your organisation's settings. Needs organisation-admin access.

Steps

  1. Open Routing rules.
  2. Choose the fallback site.
  3. Save, and activate the rule set.

The activate button is disabled until this is set.

What will arrive there

Lines nobody could fulfil. Not difficult ones, not ambiguous ones — impossible ones, where the stock does not exist at any eligible site.

That means the fallback is less a routing destination than a holding place for problems. Every line landing there needs a decision: restock and fulfil, back-order, or cancel.

Choosing well

Your main warehouse is usually right. It is most likely to receive stock soonest, and most likely to have someone who notices a line that should not be there.

A small shop is usually wrong. It will accumulate lines it cannot fulfil, quite possibly unwatched.

The question to ask is not "where would I like these to go?" but "where will someone actually see them?"

Not a general default

The fallback is reached only when the stock gate leaves no candidates at all. If your rules narrow to several sites and never get to one, that is a different situation and the fallback plays no part.

Choosing a fallback expecting it to absorb ambiguous orders will not work. See the fallback site.

Watch what lands there

A fallback site quietly filling up is worth knowing about — it means you are taking orders for things you do not have. That may point at stock figures published too high, or reorder levels set too low.
